Yoga Almeria Community

This is Almeria, Spain, where I have lived for the last 5 years. I am originally from Vancouver, Canada. Both Vancouver and Almeria are extremely beautiful places, but in stark contrast to one another. I switched enchanted forests for majestic deserts. I dreamt of a place like Almeria, specifically the landscapes found in Cabo de Gata. I also dreamt I would one day teach yoga in front of my house by the ocean. I am litterally living my dream everytime you come to class.

The students who come to class are both Spanish and English speakers, and usually a mix of locals (from Almeria or other parts of Spain) and foreigners (mainly from Europe and North America). I adapt the language to whoever shows up that day. I also adapt the class itself to whoever shows up that day (providing more challenging postures for advanced students and adapted versions for beginners). Overall, I tend to attract a group of beginner/introductory students, people looking to enjoy a nice saturday morning yoga class. So you don't need to feel intimidated if it is your first class, you are in the right place.

I invite you to practice with me now on youtube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCA5qG5IuCt0rTqUrYa_LRTw/

Everyone is welcome to practice with us. It doesn't matter how much experience you have, or how flexible you are. I am especially happy to introduce people to their first classes/experiences with yoga, I love to have the chance to ignite the yoga journey of another person. I really love to show people what yoga is really about, and that it isn't for any one type of person, it is for everyBody. Yoga isn't about being flexible, although if you are consistent with your practice you are very likely to become flexible. Yoga is a way of life.

The first classes I taught here in Almeria were on the roof of my old buidling. I have also taught workshops in yoga studios/retreat centers here in Almeria, and at language schools such as the Escuela Oficial de Idiomas (both in Almeria Capital and El Ejido). Currently my group practices on the beach or at my in-home yoga studio in front of the beach in Zapillo (I mean when we are not in lockdown, as we are right now as I write this). Currently we practice mainly Hatha Yoga and an adapted form of Ashtanga Yoga.  Once a month we gather for a full moon meditation. In winter when we meditate indoors; I normally prepare something for after meditation (bizcocho/ chai tea or  a soup), so it is a chance to really share and know the people you practice with. This is a concept I brought with me from the first yoga studio I ever practiced at in Vancouver, Canada. In summer, we meditate outdoors on the beach under the moon.

On this blog, along with my youtube channel, and through classes, I hope to share what I have learnt and what I am still learning on my yoga journey. During class in person/on youtube, it is time to practice and experience "yoga". Here on this blog, I can elaborate around the philosophy of yoga. Theory and practice combined helps us go deeper. I hope to bring to life how philosophical aspects apply to your yoga practice and to everyday living in modern times (in contrast to a yogi in the Himalayas). I also want to share about food in this blog, since food is also a great part of my spiritual practice. Food affects the equilibrium of your mind and will influence your ability to maintain present awareness, calmness, and compassion. Food also affects the earth and the people who grow it. Therefore, eating is a spiritual act that impacts your relationship with the world and your relationship to yourself.

More than an academic blog on yoga and food, I hope to communicate in a simple, clear, and personal way that is easy to understand and apply to your own life. Welcome, and thanks for sharing your yoga journey with me.

What style of yoga do I teach? I teach students, not styles 😊. A bit more about me and my approach:

My training, as well as my practice as a student, have exposed me to  various styles  of yoga for extended periods of my life.  All of  these experiences have provided me with a variety of tools from  various styles  of yoga, to meet the needs of my students. In line with Krishnamacharya, I teach dependent on the student or students I have in front of me. I teach what the  particular student   requires , at this  particular moment  in time. As per Krishnamacharya's teachings, there is no ultimate or general protocol. The teaching given depends on the student.   My training and evolution as a teacher of yoga   I began teaching in 2013, after completing my first yoga training in Dharamsala India. Since my  initial  training in India, I have continued to pursue and build my knowledge of yoga through both my own practice, and  additional  yoga teacher training, which I continue to the present day. Initial...

Why Asana Practice in Yoga? (Integrating lessons from Chennai).

Yoga is meant to be about the mind, meant to be a spiritual practice, a way to know the true self & therefore the universe, truth and ultimately allow us to feel truly happy by doing so. So the question is: What does a physical body practice have to do with any of that?  Sometimes, I still question it myself. As I go through my Ashtanga practice sequence of postures. I sometimes wonder, am I really bringing myself closer to knowing myself, or knowing what I consider as god, or doing anything more than just getting a bit more flexible and a bit stronger? I do feel at least I am ´´cleansing the system´´ as I compress and twist the internal organs, as I breath conscious ujjayi with lengthy exhale breaths-I feel yes I could agree this breath internally heats and then expels toxins-both physical and mental malas/toxins- yes it makes sense to me. I can agree that I am physically becoming healthier and I know this too impacts the quality of my thoughts. I can understand that my microb...

Satya, Speaking What is True (Lessons from Chennai)

One of my favorite lessons I took away from my trip to Chennai was the discussion around the topic of Satya with Mr. Sridhar. For those of you unfamiliar with the term and it´s context within yoga philosophy, I will first take a moment to explain that.  In Yoga philosophy (as described by Patanjali) there are 8 ´´branches´´ or aspects of yoga. In my last post I talked about the branch we are most familiar with in classes, Asana (Postures). Another branch speaks to the way in which we relate to the world. It describes not moral codes but rather suggests ways which will allow us to have the most harmonious relationships and therefore peace of mind. There are five ´´suggestions´´ or principal. Ahimsa, non-harm, is actually the first, and it is then followed with Satya ,speaking the truth.  Satya is often thought to come in conflict with the first principal Ahimsa. Many believe you cannot both speak the truth all the time and not cause harm. I too have struggled to undersan...
